about

This piece started as a simple keyboard patch created during a Tornado Watch in the Spring of 2019. I worked very hard giving it all kinds of deep characteristics - attack on different key velocities, varying decay rates, characteristic changes on different key pressures, harmonic pitch shifts...everything I could manage to manipulate in an effort to give this one sound life. I sent what I had to Terry.

Much like the proper and appropriate advice he gave me on many other songs in this collection, he said no, that's not what I want. I need more. I need to build. Use what is available. I need layers. Live inside the spectrum. Grow. Add. Expand.

Over the course of the next three months I did just that. And? He was absolutely 100% right. Every time. While the piece turned out to be quite amazing, I have to say the last two minutes are by far the most forlorn piece of music I have ever written, and VERY fitting for the piece.

As I was beginning to further develop the piece, the title and a mental picture became very obvious to me. Have you ever felt so frustrated that you just wanted to throw in the towel and walk away, even if you had a lot to lose? There you stand... Arms hanging limply at your sides. Shoulders slumped. Head slung low? Tears of frustration on your cheeks. When your soulmate grabs your shoulders, their gentle, caring eyes meet yours and say "Please, keep trying".

about

Fighting For Flags Davenport, Iowa

I grew up as a huge fan of progressive artists and musical innovators in many genres of music. Early on, I drifted towards heavier and more technical music, but now my focus is now centered on light electronic music, piano compositions, movie score and artists such as Olafur Arnalds, Max Richter, Kevin Moore's Chroma Key, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson (and much more).May their memories never fade! ... more
